‘A complex character deserving sympathy.’ How far and in what ways do you agree with this view of Angelo in Measure for Measure?

In Shakespeare's Measure for Measure, Angelo develops as a twofold sided character; a fitting point of convergence for such a ‘problem play', the same number of Shakespeare's later works are viewed as. Shakespeare seems to have taken his motivation for the story from sources, for example, Promos and Cassandra (George Whetstone) and Giraldi Cinthio's Hecatommithi, the two plays where a grandiose agent, be it Promos in Whetstone's form, or Angelo in Shakespeare's, allures a lady (Cassandra or Isabella) by guarantee of absolution for her denounced sibling. Researchers have contended for a considerable length of time whether Angelo, or undoubtedly Promos, is a good or a malevolent character. Those researchers who bolster the thought of Angelo as good frequently refer to the accompanying elements in the play: the Duke clearly trusts Angelo; Angelo is unsettled enough before the finish of the play to offer a genuine statement of regret; and Angelo attempts to oppose the allurement that Isabella presents. Then again, others have contended that Shakespeare delineates Angelo as an absolutely malicious man. These pundits underscore Angelo's treatment of Marian, the Duke's conceivable doubt of Angelo, his longing for Isabella, and his wrecked guarantee to Isabella. By inspecting Angelo in both of these conditions, it will become clear that the best understanding of Angelo's character is a mix of both of these features. One of these pundits, Leo Kirschbaum, proposes that the adjustment in the structure of Measure for Measure is the aftereffect of an adjustment in the portrayal of Angelo. Toward the start of the play, Kirschbaum notes, Angelo is remorseless and unbendable, yet this is tempered to some degree by the way that he is additionally honorable in his steady adherence to the law. In any case, at long last he is a character who is not, at this point honorable yet who is rather â€Å"small-disapproved, mean, figuring (and) malicious. † Therefore, a far reaching examination of the character and his essentialness is important to choose whether Angelo does really merit compassion. Endless supply of the early scenes, we, as the crowd, would instinctually start to consider Angelo a character not deserving of compassion, as he has apparently tricked the Duke into believing him enough to give him control over Vienna and afterward promptly sentences Claudio to death for impregnating his darling, regardless of his real love for her. By revealing to Angelo â€Å"Mortality and kindness in Vienna Live in thy tongue, and heart†, it is obvious that the Duke trusts Angelo, significantly more than his own right-hand man, Escalus, who is disregarded to be the Duke's representative. This, in any case, is eclipsed by the Duke's discussion with the monk in I. iii where he says â€Å"Believe not that the spilling dart of adoration Can penetrate a total bosom† and â€Å"I have on Angelo impos'd the workplace; Who may in th'ambush of my name strike home †¦ ; in the two statements we are persuaded that the Duke maybe doesn't trust Angelo to the degree that is at first evident. Rather, it has all the earmarks of being a piece of a more extensive arrangement of which we are so far unconscious. To make an ethical judgment on Angelo at this phase of the play would be off base nonetheless; we have scarcely met him as an individual, and just observed him in a short trade while tolerating the position the Duke off ers him. He is, in any case, â€Å"tyrannous† enough to guarantee Claudio's freedom as a byproduct of Isabella's virginity, such is his capacity in the Duke's place. These elements, alongside his remorseless treatment of Mariana, with whom he had plans of marriage which separated in light of the fact that â€Å"her guaranteed extents Came kind of composition†, uncovering his shallow and misleading nature, would highlight Angelo not being deserving of the crowd's compassion, and just a cool, aloof character (â€Å"whose blood is very snowbroth†) made by Shakespeare to mirror the unbridled shrewdness of Viennese society at that point. For all the negative analysis of Angelo, there is in actuality a lot of proof to recommend he is a character with reclaiming highlights who can be viewed as mirroring the positive ramifications of discipline in a play so worried about the subject of equity. His expression of remorse in the last scene is the prime case of his fairly modified disposition, because of the occasions of the story. He is â€Å"sorry that such distress I get And so profound sticks it in my contrite heart† †a statement which alludes to the Duke's examination that â€Å"the spilling dart of affection Can [not] pierce a total bosom†. This statement of regret, particularly with its situation toward the finish of the play, leaves the crowd with a somewhat more positive perspective on Angelo than would be had something else. Angelo's underlying refusal of Isabella's contribution while completing the Duke's arrangement is another factor of the play which would lead the crowd to identifying to some degree with Angelo and not thinking of him as an altogether vindictive character. In spite of the proof of these two focuses, in any case, I solidly accept that Angelo is for the most part a character undeserving of compassion, whose notoriety among the majority is all around established by his narrow minded activities and two-faced nature, as we discover that he has carried out a wrongdoing far more terrible than Claudio's †something clearly known by the Duke, who soliloquises toward the finish of Act III, saying â€Å"He who the blade of paradise will bear Should be as sacred as severe†. In spite of the fact that the best examination of Angelo as an individual would obviously be a blend of both pernicious and helpful, the same number of the key characters in Shakespeare's ‘problem plays' would best be portrayed as, he gives off an impression of being endlessly a malignant being, not worth of the crowd's sympathy.

Colin McDaniels Dr. Kim Beowulf Paper – Grendel’s Mother In the poem Beowulf, the most evident theme is the importance of the Germanic heroic code. The heroic code was what made Beowulf so famous and god-like during his renowned life. The code is displayed in the opening lines of the poem and continued to show up throughout the duration of the poem. Heroism is often painted with a protagonist, which causes some acts of heroism to be overlooked when an antagonist follows the heroic code. Throughout the poem, there are many acts of heroism displayed, but many people overlook the way that Grendel’s mother followed the Germanic heroic code. The Man Who Was Almost A Man By Richard Wright - 1896 Words

Arguably one of the most important moments in a man’s life is when he realizes he is no longer a boy. Often times this evolution in social status occurs without deliberate attempt. In the literary work entitled, â€Å"The Man Who Was Almost a Man†, Richard Wright outlines a story about a young boy named Dave, who struggles with his own perception of manhood. Throughout this story Dave wrestles with the societal concept of hegemonic masculinity and tries to force his way into manhood. Pop Art (293 words) Essay Example For Students

Pop Art (293 words) Essay Pop ArtThe birth of Pop art (short for Popular art) emerged in England between the years of 1950 and 1960, but heightened to its full potential in New York. Pop art was a form of rebellion against Abstract Expressionism. Pop artists felt that â€Å"Abstract Expressionism was an elite art, to which only a tiny class, mainly of painters and poets, could respond† (30 Compton). Pop artists also considered them pretentious and over-intense and at the same time, only selling to the greedy middle class. So, in order for the artists who were against Abstract Expressionism to dissent from that pretentious position they created Pop art. Pop art is the imagery of popular culture drawn from the cinema, television, advertising, comics and packaging to express abstract formal relationships. Furthermore, Pop artists also duplicated common mass production images such as beer bottles, soup cans, comic strips and road signs in paintings, collages, and sculptures. Others actually incorporated the objects themselves into their paintings and sculptures, and often times modifying them as well. Materials of modern technology, such as plastic, urethane foam, and acrylic paint, were also included in some of their art works. Critics did not easily accept this new and bizarre style of art. In fact, the â€Å"politically engaged critics †¦ complained that Pop art is the art of passive acceptance† and that the subject matters are wild and impassioned, â€Å"and therefore in itself a satire on American life†. (30 Compton) However, that is rarely the case, the artists may be radical but they never intend to satirize the American life. Their only purpose is to stress the importance of an everyday object and their instant recognizable image and for everyone to be able to relate to it Arts Essays

Accountability Essay Example

Accountability Essay Example Accountability Essay Accountability Essay Without accountability of my fellow oldies I put them as well as myself in danger. If I dont know where my team is it is impossible to come to their aid if needed and vice versa. That being said it is a key part in being a leader for that exact reason. You cannot be an effective leader without knowing or at the very least have some type Of idea of the location of the ones you are leading and what they are doing at all times. Accountability in its self is a major part of not only being in the military, but many different aspects of life as well. The rules apply where ever you go. Parents must maintain accountability of their children, teachers must maintain accountability of their students, and supervisors must maintain accountability oftener workers. No matter what you do in life you will have to keep accountability of someone or something, and someone will most likely be keeping accountability of you, there is no getting around it. Most crimes happen when people are lost and/or nobody knows where they are. If somebody at least knows the general area of where you are they can find you a lot quicker than if they were just searching where you might be. That in its self could be the difference between life and death. People lose their jobs over accountability every day. Whether it be losing a file, or not calling in sick, or just not calling to tell somebody that they are going to be late for whatever reason. A lack of focus and accountability loses your package in the mail, your house hold goods when moving, or your paperwork at SSL . At school you have to keep track of your text books, supplies, and your schedule in order to operate smoothly. Accountability affects your everyday life without you even legalizing it. At this point in our lives it is no longer a job but a part of life and a sign of responsibility. Another sign of maturity is holding yourself accountable for your own actions. If you are one of those people who goes around making excuses for everything you do, people will begin to lose faith in you, and in turn you will not only lose your credibility but their trust as well. After a certain point excuses become less relevant or believable and you are seen and/or treated as if you were lying. No leader likes the It wasnt my fault, l as goanna, or see what had happened was guy/gal and you shouldnt want to be him/her. It is always better to hold yourself accountable for your own actions, you will gain a lot more respect that way. Once again accountability plays a major role in the quality of your everyday life and the lives of those around you as well. Good accountability or a lack of accountability can mean the difference in somebody getting paid the right amount or even at all. It could be the difference of receiving a tax refund or paying the state more Han what you owe.

TMA T173 01 Many engineering projects are associated with construction Essay

TMA T173 01 Many engineering projects are associated with construction - Essay Example The project aimed at providing an arena for the summer Olympic Games of 2012. The project also aimed at offering an improved sporting experience to that of Beijing, 2008. The British government sought to prove its capabilities of hosting high-profile global sporting events. Following delayed completion of the Wembley renovation, the British engineering sector needed to undertake construction of a new, modern stadium effectively (Woodman, 2007). Funding of the construction was provided by the public sector through the British government. Various companies also contributed significantly towards the funding for the construction. Following economic recession, budgetary allocations for the project had to be distributed among numerous organisations (Dyckhoff, 2007). Though the main contractor was Sir Robert McAlpine, other companies were also awarded sub-contracts. Each element of the construction was undertaken by a different company. This could be attributed to the limited time available for the completion of construction. The main contractor played a supervisory role of the sub-contractors. The benefits for this project include the probability of British construction companies winning tenders for Olympic stadiums’ construction. Successful and timely completion redeemed the image of British companies following delays in completing the Wembley stadium. The finishing of the stadium utilised high-tech decorative wrap to cover the concrete as steel was used for construction. This followed criticisms of the stadium having a dull appearance. The wrap gives the entire stadium a glossy appearance illuminating the London skyline. The spectacular feature of the stadium remains the 25-metre high vertical panels fitted on the exterior side in the stadium. These panels turned the exterior into an enormous video screen (Booth, 2008). The stadium appears like a circular screen from outside. Numerous challenges faced the construction of the Olympic stadium.

Polydactyle Case Essay Example for Free

Polydactyle Case Essay Polydactyle is a genetic disorder that is caused by a gene on chromosome seven. Polydactyle is a condition were an individual has more than five digits per hand. Most cases are isolated and not related to any other disorder but some are related to others. The errors occur during fetal development and they are caused by on several mutations on a gene that is known as chromosome seven. Polydactlyle is Autosomal dominant meaning that an offspring can get this disease by having it passed down from just one parent. During normal embryonic development while the infant is still in the womb the hand of the infant will most likely form a shape of a paddle. Following six to seven weeks later the paddle hand will split into digits as we know as fingers also resulting in more toes than normal, more fingers than normal extra digit on hand and extra digit on foot. The separation process is excessive while creating the extra â€Å"segment†. Polydactyle is also just one of those genetic defects that underlays hereditary from a parent. Polydactyle is often found more usually with African Americans to get it instead of other ethnic backgrounds. Polydactyly occurs by its self by isolated conditions or in conjunction with other symptoms as one aspect of a multi-symptom diseases. There are several forms of isolated and several forms of Polydactyly; each of these, where the genetics is understood, is caused by an autosomal dominant gene. This means that since the gene is autosomal (not sex-linked), males and females are equally likely to inherit the trait. This also means that since the gene is dominant, children who have only one parent with the trait have a 50% chance of inheriting it. However, people in the same family carrying the same gene can have different degrees of Polydactyly. There are a number of treatments that are used for the disorder Polydactyl but many families tend to go one way with the disorder. Most families contact a Orthopedic Surgeons or a Plastic Surgeon. This specialist removes there childs extra digit when they are 1 to 2 years of age. But Polydactyly  varies in complexity. A minor procedure may correct small extra digits or those with a narrow base. However, when the base is broad or if the extra digit is rooted deeply in the hand, reconstructive surgery may be the best option when the child is old enough to safely undergo an elective procedure. Operating on the bone, joint, ligaments or tendons may be necessary to create the most functional hand possible for the child so there is not a lot of pain.

The Lord Of The Flies: The Hunts :: essays research papers

A running theme in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies is the hunts and their progression, as well as symbolic meaning it possesses as the hunts continue. The hunts always ultimately revert back to an evil and primitive nature. The cycle of man’s rise to power, or righteousness, and his inevitable fall from grace is an important point that Golding proves again and again. Lord of the Flies, is a story of a group of boys of different backgrounds who are marooned on an unknown island when their plane crashes. As the boys try to organize and formulate a plan to get rescued, they begin to separate and as a result of a decision a band of savage tribal hunters is formed. Eventually the boys almost entirely shake off civilized behavior. Jack has always been an ill-natued boy even from the start of the book when he told Piggy to "Shut up, Fatty." (p.23). Dispite Jack’s unpleasent personality, his lack of courage and his conscience preventing him from killing the first pig they encountered. "They knew very well why he hadn’t; because of the enormity of the knife decending and cutting into living flesh; because of the unbearable blood." (p.34) When Jack was chosen to keep the fire going, he decides to get meat instead of tending to the fire. His pursuit for killing a pig is symbollizing a sexual desire built into human nature. While he was out pursuing the pig, the fire went out. This symbollized the fact that Jack's sexual desires led him away from hope and deeper into despair. Jack represents a Satan like, deathly force. The blood that he wallows in is a further representation of deathliness. After his first kill, "Jack transferred the knife to his left hand and smudged blood over his forehead as he pushed down the plastered hair," he unconsciously imitates the ritual of the tribal initiation of the hunter, whose face is covered with the blood of his first kill. Jack then successfully convinces many big'uns and little'uns to come along with him and join a tribe of savages. These savages have face-paint on, which makes them anonymous. This anonimity allows for each tribe member to do things he would not have normally done because of the fear of being judged by society. They basically had no shame left. So they went out, killed a pig, acted as if they were raping it, and cut off its head.

Human Nature in Macbeth Essay

Macbeth is a play that examines human nature. During the play there is a significant amount of emphasis on the different attributes and sides of human nature. The play demonstrates that everyone has the ability to do good or evil by what choices they make and what the ramifications of these actions are, decisions are made that affect the outcome of a person’s future. Macbeth is a prime example of the human nature in its very worst form. Throughout the play, Macbeth experience somewhat of a fall from grace. Macbeth’s greed and poor decision making caused him to lose everything he had worked so hard for. He became engulfed in greed and would stop at nothing to gain what he believed was rightly his. He went from somebody who was a strong courageous and well respected man who was an honourable warrior for Scotland. To someone who was so blinded by his hunger for power it drove him to incredible lengths such as killing his own cousin and best friend, to receive what was promised him by the witches. Macbeth’s disloyalty is a huge flaw in his character and part of his human nature. He murdered his long-time friend and king, Duncan. He had no remorse for his actions, he was only concerned for his own safety that he wouldn’t get caught. â€Å"The bell invites me. Hear it not, Duncan, for it is a knell that summons thee to heaven or hell. † (act 2, scene 1) Shakespeare uses the character of Macbeth to demonstrate to his audience that the decisions we make and the actions we take can easily be affected by simple aspects of human nature such as greed, this hunger for power that some people seem to possess and that we can so easily be manipulated by others to do wrong. Lady Macbeth is very manipulative towards her husband, by questioning his manhood, emotionally blackmailing him she brings out his pride to do as she desires. â€Å"When you durst do it, then you were a man; And, to be more than what you were, you would be so much more the man. † (act 1, scene 7) She plays on the weakest parts of Macbeth’s character to manipulate him. â€Å"We will proceed no further in this business. † (act 1, scene 7) This shows that Macbeth was set to not kill Duncan but Lady Macbeth manipulated him to change this mindset. So if were not for Lady Macbeth’s toying and manipulation of Macbeth he would still be the honourable man he once was. Throughout Macbeth, Shakespeare uses his main Characters, particularly Macbeth and Lady Macbeth to show the very worst of human nature and tried to show his audience and anyone to read the play in the years to come that our choices and actions can be easily influenced by others and that everything we do, particularly bad things have serious ramifications, in Macbeths case, The total destruction of himself, his wife and his country.

How Illiteracy E. Ffects Individual People And Society As...

Ciara Puckett Professor Jean Schloeman English 101 15 June 2015 How illiteracy e ffects individual people and society as a whole An Estimated 27 Million Americans are considered illiterate, and another 45 million are considered marginally competent in basic skills. (Women, illiteracy, pov) An illiterate person in our society faces trials every day that are taxing, making life difficult mentally and physically. There is an overwhelming amount of research and studies that indicate that individuals that are functionally illiterate are more likely to be unemployed, convicted of crimes, live in poverty, and drop out of high school. Being illiterate affects the quality of one’s life as well as a communities. The first problem associated with illiteracy is its negative impact on the workforce. Having literacy skills is imperative to being able to learn other skills to be able to keep up with the requirements in a job. According to Lori Forlizzi at Pennsylvania State University These jobs are demanding more education and higher levels of language, math, and reasoning skills. (Lori Forlizzi). There needs to be knowledge and understanding to be able to function in your job. Doing basic tasks require the individual to be able to read, write, and follow directions. In the Deslauriers (1990) article, it states â€Å"Illiteracy affects not only their ability to carry out work-related assignments, but also their relations with their families and even their own self-worth (Deslauriers).
